What goes into half time tea? At the break, the Mikes were a goal down – and you couldn’t say that the hosts didn’t deserve their advantage. Boldmere had a job coping, in the opening period, with the Diamonds’ simple, direct style of play, and were constantly fending their opponents off, rather than initiating anything of their own. It came as no surprise when (with Boldmere conceding fouls regularly) continued pressure resulted in the Diamonds going ahead. From a free kick thirty yards out, the ball ricocheted round the visiting goal mouth. The third attempt at goal was bulky, boisterous captain Joel Nketiah’s, and he netted from close in.
Rushden continued to play at speed, breaking up field efficiently: indeed, they were at their most dangerous when Boldmere had been attacking. From such forays, the visitors showed what they were capable of. On two occasions, James Tague fired off a twenty-yard fizzer, his shots just over the bar’s centre. Jonathan Brown had to palm away a colleague’s header, to bring us to half time at 0-1. Were we contemplating inevitable defeat?
Five minutes into the second period came the first sign that fortunes could change. Bursting through towards goal, Frankie Ealing was sent tumbling as he rounded keeper Dan Jezeph. Our referee pointed to the spot…and despite prolonged protestations from the home defence, his point prevailed. Tague fired home from the spot, to level the scores. After Jezeph had been told to calm down, we recommenced, and hope for some reward sank into Boldmere ranks. A minute later, not for the first time, it needed a timely Pedro Lima clearance off the line, after an advancing Bruno Andrade nearly finished off a slick three-man sortie up field.
From the hour on, frustration set in among the home ranks, resulting in them receiving eight yellow cards in the last half hour. Very soon, the Mikes were ahead. A lovely three-man combination across the grass ended with Kyle Byrne slotting an accurate left footed drive inside the foot of the right-hand post. It soon needed Dan O’Callaghan to clear a penetrative four-man response, but ten minutes after their second goal, the Mikes added a third. Intelligent running from Jack Burgess, and an accurate cross field ball, ended with Connor Armstrong banging one in.
Could the hosts (now losing their first home game to a team below them in the table this season) pull anything back? The Diamonds’ cause was not helped when the ever voluble Nketiah, often liable to express himself loudly in words beginning with F, tried our official’s patience once too often, and received his marching orders. With twenty minutes to go, the visitors could play out time, and bring on some fresh legs – all of whom played without threatening further deficit.
A home crowd of nearly five hundred loyally applauded their men after the final whistle, reserving pantomime boos for our referee. Isn’t it odd how, whenever a team loses at home, it’s the ref’s fault?
