New signing Lewi Burnside started on the bench, as the Mikes hoped to extend their winning run to five – but eventually had to be satisfied with a single point. “The greatest enemy of excellence is perfectionism”, goes the old saying; and you wonder whether the Mikes would have done better had they adopted a more basic approach. A lot of time was spent passing along the back line, while Kye Bilton and Harry Crook were wandering lonely as a cloud out wide, unnoticed and waiting for a pass. Having said that, the Mikes started brightly, and went close twice in the opening three minutes, Kyle Byrne heading just over from a penetrative cross from the right, and James Tague hitting the bottom of the post from five yards, after a neat four man move.
Weathering early pressure, the Saints slowly came into the game, but always looked most dangerous when breaking out of defence, the speed of Rhys Thorpe and Harvey Williams being countered by some heroic intervention from Pedro Lima (how much battering and injury can that bloke soak up?) and a holding operation by two defenders on Williams. Fortunately for the hosts, the St Neots shooting left a lot to be desired, once they had the home goal in sight.
The contest now shuttled up and down the Changing Block touchline, the opposition (as usual) being larger than most of the diminutive Mikes. As the half hour approached, the nearest we came to a goal before the break occurred when Tague ran on to a long Daniel O’Callaghan ball, and a Goff one hander pushed it round the post for a corner.
St Neots came out on the front foot after the interval, that man Williams immediately firing in a centre that no one could quite convert, before single handedly running the gamut of the Mikes’ rearguard, the day eventually saved by a scrambling Jonathan Brown dive. Once the hour had passed, both teams started to introduce new faces, in hopes of finding something that would break the deadlock. It was Boldmere’s turn now to look dangerous coming out of defence, as the Saints piled on the pressure, Goff blocking Tague’s finish after a clever Tolani Omotola back heel had set him free. Frustration now set in among the visiting ranks, Connor Armstrong and Aris Christophorou (who had to hobble off) both being fouled off the ball.
Nine minutes from time, the nearest we came to any score happened when a fifteen-yard Armstrong rocket was pushed over the bar by Goff. Realising the sands of time were now running out, we saw the Mikes’ best attacking play, Jaiy Leydon going tantalisingly close at the end of an incisive four-man combination. In the end though, they had to settle for a single point; and you can’t really say they deserved more.
