It is with a heavy heart that we record the passing of our Groundsman Brian Harvey. He was admitted to hospital on June 15th and despite having a pacemaker fitted the hoped for improvement did not materialise and he passed away on Tuesday 23 June. Brian was born on 20 September 1940. He was born in Cannock but the family moved to Erdington, evacuated to Minehead before returning to Northfield. Moving back to Erdington Brian got involved with Boldmere St Michaels in the early 70’s. He served on the social committee, was the bingo caller at Sunday night bingo sessions and belonged to the fishing club. He loved bowling but bowled for The Greyhound not BSM. He eventually became the club groundsman and served over thirty years in this role winning groundsman of the year on one occasion. Typical of most groundsman it seemed he almost begrudged people playing on his pristine surface even when we switched to a 3G pitch in 2016. When not busy at Boldmere he looked after the bowling green at The Greyhound pub in Court Lane and also kept an allotment at Thornbridge Avenue. Members of Boldmere St Michaels looked forward to his generous annual offerings from his allotment. Brian never married but was a wonderful companion to Linda and they enjoyed many social outings together which in latter years included trips to Edgbaston for the cricket, ‘I love the hundred hundreds’ was one of his favourite quotes. Brian had a heart of gold and will be sorely missed by everyone not least the Grumpy Old Mens Group at the Mikes. We offer our condolences to all his family and friends.
