Results are often decided in the closing minutes, and so it was here, Sphinx scoring twice in the last three standard minutes, when the Mikes must have thought they were holding on for at least a point. The hosts kicked off…and immediately began playing football, making two chances in the opening three minutes. They had the better of the first period, although the Mikes might have taken the lead through a Danny O’Callaghan header that went just wide. Striker Daniele Reka was constantly fouled, (not returning after the break), while a high back line, vociferously instructed by keeper Charlie Woods to “get out!”., kept the Mikes’ forwards far from their target. Despite two periods of intense pressure from the homesters, and a number of free kicks surrendered twenty yards out, the Mikes held firm, and we arrived at the interval goalless.

Charlie Manners replaced Kye Bilton at half time. The second half, initially, was a continuance of the first; but as the game wore on, the visitors came into things more, Danny Monger forced to foul the marauding Freddie Cockerell, a fine save from the resulting free kick giving the Mikes their first corner, after fifty-four minutes. As the hour approached, the Sphinx realised that victory wasn’t inevitable, while the penny dropped with the Mikes that they could get something from this encounter. Consequently, both sides tried to go up the gears, and a frantic game resulted, head tennis breaking out for the first time. Four times, Boldmere came close to taking the lead. A shot from out on the right grazed the opposite post; Woods had to push a wicked twenty-yard curver from Jayden Bailey-Hunter over the bar; a cross by him from the left was pushed away after the middle men somehow failed to connect; and a Freddie Cockerell effort was just off target.

You could tell the hosts were becoming worried about how things were unfolding: they used all five substitutes (even substituting a substitute), whereas Boldmere’s four reinforcements included newly arrived Jayden Bailey-Hunter, Constantine Panayiotou, and Taylor Dodd. As it turned out, Sphinx’s last but one substitute delivered the goods for them. Three minutes from the ninety, our referee paused matters, ensuring Jonathan Brown was not hindered from dealing with an impending corner. A tremendous scramble ensued, finished by Damien Kelly getting the ball over the line via the custodians back. The light blues now visibly relaxing, right on the ninety itself Kelly received a direct pass, turned his marker, and fired home his second: game over. It was tough on the Mikes who had defended stoically for most of the game.

With both Belper and Corby failing to score, and losing, Sphinx now go top of the table. Boldmere, meanwhile, continue to hover above the relegation zone.
