An uplifting, ultimately exciting game saw the Mikes gain three valuable points against tenth placed Borough. A paltry pre-Christmas attendance (with as many visiting supporters as home ones) watched Rugby have the better of the opening exchanges, Jonathan Brown saving the situation with a brave diving save, and turning a thirty-yard curving comet over the bar, in the opening three minutes. Boldmere, meanwhile, kept four players back for their first corner, their play making Borough concede three fouls within the next five minutes, as a cat-and-mouse game emerged, the Mikes’ efforts being mercifully clear of defensive overelaboration.
Seventeen minutes in, full back Luke Rowe went down under a Kye Bilton challenge. His sallow complexion, wild, dark hair and beard made it easy to imagine him as the star of the Christmas story. Failing to gain a foul or any treatment, his subsequent instant resurrection gained the comment, “Unlucky, Jesus”, to the amusement of the crowd.
Once the half hour had gone, Boldmere began to create chances, though how they didn’t concede from a frantic scrum in front of their left-hand post, goodness knows. By now, Rugby’s sole ultra had given up drumming, and agitated voices howled, “relax!” at a seemingly calm Brown. Right on half time, Connor Armstrong fired across the goal from well out on the left…and the Mikes were one up.
Borough continued to play cultured football after the break, but could soon have gone further behind when Himalayan keeper Sam Lomax dropped a corner: how they didn’t, we’ll never know. The hosts turned up the pressure from the three-quarter mark, but Jack Burgess in particular threatened on the break, and with just over a quarter of an hour’s standard time left, newly returned Harry Crook exhibited some accomplished footwork before firing Boldmere two ahead.
Rugby, to their credit, never gave the game up, continuing to play as a well-oiled machine. As the Mikes began to play out time, the homesters ramped up the pressure, Boldmere often booting the ball indiscriminately up field. The final ten minutes (all of which were in added time) became pure Kitchen Sink, at one point Brown and Christophorou both injured, following a desperate clearance. Seven minutes past the ninety, Lathaniel Rowe-Turner floated one over a crowded box…into the net, to set up a frenzied last three minutes. Mountainous “stopper” Richard Black joined the siege, which climaxed in a free kick facing a wall of contestants massed on the visiting box’s edge. “Do not break”, howled Manager Roberts at his beleaguered troops. They didn’t, the whistle sounded, and Mikes had plundered a well-earned win.
