In a scrambling, hard fought game, finishing made the difference between the two teams. Having said that both goals were preceded by unawarded fouls. Only five minutes in, the ball was ping-ponging round the Mikes’ box. There was a blatant push on Nathan Oyemade just outside the box but the whistle remained silent, and eventually Will Jones forced the ball home from close in.
An even game then emerged, and within six minutes Boldmere had gone close twice, via a bicycle kick from Freddie Cockerell, and Kory Burke pushing a Kyle Burke cross just wide. The chances continued to come as the hosts had more territory. Cockerell forced a corner, and fired wide from ten yards, while Kyle Burke hooked over from close in; and just when you thought they might gain an equaliser, the Doughboys doubled their lead. With the half hour gone, left winger Taylor Franklin twinkled his way into the penalty area, and his cross slid across the home goalmouth. A minute later, despite Freddie Cockerell being man handled in the centre circle just before the winger received the ball, he repeated the feat; and this time, Glenn Walker was sliding in at the far post to poke home. Oddly, our referee announced only one added minute before the break, when at least five had been used up by injuries: in the end, he added two and a half. Half time: 0-2.
Wellingborough started the second period strongly, a long throw causing mayhem in the home defence, the ball eventually hitting the bar. The lights came on as a heavy rainstorm swept through, Franklin going close from all of forty yards. The homesters made a triple substitution seven minutes after the interval, but Wellingborough continued to press. With the luxury of being able to relax on a two-goal cushion, they managed to clear their lines efficiently and pass the ball about smoothly, creating two more chances Jones nearly converted. The Mikes, meanwhile, were fighting hard to get back in touch, conceding three yellow cards in the process (to Wellingborough’s none), and went close twice in a minute – but couldn’t force home the goal which might have changed the encounter’s momentum. The paltry crowd (which hardly made three figures) were beginning to drift home by the time Connor Armstrong fired a twenty-yard exocet past the visitors’ left-hand post. After some unnecessary back chat between the stand side linesman and Wellingborough substitute Jordan Crawford, Boldmere were left to ponder the uncomfortable fact that they have failed to score in five out of their last six games.
